LOVE Haldeman! An excellent addition to the Marsbound universe.
Amazon Editorial Review
The Others disposed of Earth’s spaceship fleet as easily as swatting a fly. They blew up the Moon, letting the resulting cloud of rocks and gravel go into orbit. Then, for good measure, they turned off all the power, leaving Earth with nine billion hungry people competing for dwindling resources.
Now Carmen Dula, the first human to encounter Martians and then the mysterious alien Others, and her colleagues struggle to find a way—using nineteenth-century technology—to reclaim the future that has been stolen from them.

Perfect for Spatial’s Apocalyptic bookbox😊
Adding to Spatial’s Apocalyptic bookbox
I'm claiming this book from the Bookbox of the Apocalypse. I enjoyed Marsbound, the first book in the series, and look forward to catching up with Carmen.
Later: While I haven't read Starbound, the second book in the series, I was able to pick up on events (thanks in part to Carmen giving her own version of an info-dump to some newly-met characters) - and it was all pretty horrifying! Our protagonist is back on Earth, but an Earth that has been deprived of electrical power by the enigmatic Others. This means that much of the book is a kind of post-apocalyptic survival epic - with Carmen and her husband and their allies attempting to work out what the Others are really doing with both the Martians and the Earthlings, and what, if anything, they can do to push back. But survival is key, and as desperate humans struggle for diminishing high-tech supplies, Carmen faces losses and betrayal that might break her.
The conclusion is poignant, but leaves many questions unanswered - though we can hope that the survivors will be left in peace. For now...
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Guidelines for safely visiting and stocking Little Free Libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the LFL site here.
I left this book in this charming Little Free Library, which turns out to be conveniently located at the roadside rather than next to the pond - a good thing on this day, as there was some kind of festival going on and a dense population of tents and visitors all around the area. Anyway, I hope someone enjoys the book!
