"It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.

His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang."

It illuminates wonderfully why this novel stands out from the rest of his works.

Wow! thanks a lot for this terrific Christmas surprise, Vedrana! I thought it'd be The Graveyard Book, but this is even better since I've not read it already ^__^
Should I happen to come upon a specific book I'll happily return the favor, since I got now your address ...

As we know, Gaiman is also a poet. No, primarily a poet, the big, black romantic. I actually don't care for poems, but I adore Gaiman's poetic prose, where every sentence breaths the air of poetry.

The story feels completely autobiographical, although it's not. But I could hear the voice of the seven-years-old boy clearly, he is much as I imagine Gaiman must have been back then, and it's like traveling through the author's seven years old mind.
The border between dream and reality is very permeable, the pond which is really an ocean might appear as a pond to anyone. But Gaiman's hero lives in both worlds, and takes us along onto a scary, thrilling and comforting adventure. And it's oh, so moving; I'm in tears every time I read it, and I've read it now for the third or fourth time. There is magic which never gets lost.

I was tempted to keep it in my collection, but it's on so many wish lists, that I probably should part from it and wait until I find another copy to keep ;)

“Grown-ups don't look like grown-ups on the inside either. Outside, they're big and thoughtless and they always know what they're doing. Inside, they look just like they always have. Like they did when they were your age. Truth is, there aren't any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.”
