An incredibly gripping story. The different strands of the story - the trip itself, the family's search for the missing adventurers, and Bessie's life before meeting Glen - are cleverly interwoven and movingly told. And what made it really fascinating for me were the descriptions of the incredibly basic equipment they were using - if you suggested to a modern white-water rafter that they attempt rafting even a small rapid (let alone something like the Colorado River!) in a heavy wooden boat, without helmets, wetsuits, or even lifejackets, they'd think you were completely mad.
