Newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde plan to navigate the treacherous rapids of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, but vanish one month later, in a novel that interweaves the story of their fateful journey with their families' efforts to find them.
From the shelf at Trattorie for release at BCNZ Convention, Easter 2005
Picked up at some time over the convention - I'm starting to lose track of the days...
An incredibly gripping story. The different strands of the story - the trip itself, the family's search for the missing adventurers, and Bessie's life before meeting Glen - are cleverly interwoven and movingly told. And what made it really fascinating for me were the descriptions of the incredibly basic equipment they were using - if you suggested to a modern white-water rafter that they attempt rafting even a small rapid (let alone something like the Colorado River!) in a heavy wooden boat, without helmets, wetsuits, or even lifejackets, they'd think you were completely mad.
Given to someone at today's meetup.
Picked up at a meet-up,about time I logged it.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
We are restocking the bookshelf as it is looking very tatty and it needs some better quality books to smarten it up.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and after I read it I searched the internet for more information as the whole tale was just so interesting.
