WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Taking to the January meet up for the "Queens and Knights" theme - though I have included kings and earls and ladies and such in my reading of this theme! I really enjoyed this translation of Beowulf and it was interesting to be able to see it in the original and attempt to compare and decipher! I had pretty much no luck with the original except to note where certain words like linden and such basically made the transition to modern English.

Picked this up at get together.
Mostly I picked this up out of curiosity since it has the English translation and the Old English side by side. I've read the poem before and remember quite enjoying it. I more or less knew the story beforehand, but it was nice to read the actual piece of work. I'm also glad that I skimmed the introduction, which gave me a different perspective while reading it regarding how the tale digresses into other stories.
Thanks for the interesting version!

Taken to get together
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing April meet-up. Anything I know about Beowulf, which is very little, comes from an episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Time to read the actually poem.
Also, the custom bookplate inside the book is awesome! Books are indeed like the TARDIS: bigger on the inside.

Well, that episode of Star Trek: Voyager was misleading. Not that I was expecting a sci-fi show to have an accurate account of something playing out on the holodeck, but the character I liked the most from that episode was totally made up and not in the poem. But anyway, the actual poem. Beowulf has an odd structure. You'd think the entire thing would be about Beowulf fighting Grendal, but it goes beyond, which is kind of neat. It's not just about the glory days of this hero. I'm not a huge fan of poems and I found the narrative kind of wandered in certain bits, but I can forgive that since this is an epic poem and deviation was probably common when it was read aloud. This book is also half the length it appears to be, since the English translation only takes up one side, so you can finish this book in no time.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing May meet-up.

Returning to Calgary BookCrossing group
Got these from a BookCrosser to return to circulation. I am sorting the books and either passing directly to a Calgary member who has requested it or returning it to the person who introduced it to the group. Hopefully this one will find a new reader soon!
Taking to work to start our communal bookshelf!
