I have read a few of Sandford's books, but haven't read it order. In this book, Lucas and Del Capslock travel to northern Minnesota to investigate a double hanging in the middle of Winter.
The bodies, naked and hanged, are discovered by a twelve year old girl, Letty West. Letty lives with her alcoholic mother. Letty acts older than Twelve, probably because of to the responsibilities she has. She becomes involved in the investigation. When the bad guy sees this and assumes that she knows something. He tries to kill her. She's wounded, but her mother is killed.
I probably should get a list and read the books in order.
