Reading Peter Hessler's account of Fuling, in 1996 when he arrived as a Peace Corps teacher, brought me right into his world, as if I were silently standing by, observing what he observed. The detail, the pace, and the subtlety of his writing are wonderful. Although Mr. Hessler's Fuling is gone, I am sure there are many more places where a contemporary traveller would be just as awed.
