My sister sent this book to me because I'm a bit of hiking-nut myself. I read it in one(long) day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Neither Bryson nor his buddy Katz are veteran hikers and the book should prove instructive & inspiring to novice backpackers.
He provides several amusing vignettes of life on the trail, along with some interesting history and plenty of snobbishness about locals and the Forest Service.
If this whets your appetite for outdoor adventure consider reading A Hiker's Companion: 12,000 miles of trail-tested wisdom by Ross & Gladfelter.
Happy Trails,
