Tall format paperback.

Addison lives beneath the city, alone: other people - upon seeing his face, his eyes, even just his hands - react with loathing and extreme violence. So since the death of the man he called Father, he has been alone.

Then one night he discovers a mysterious young woman running from danger in the locked main library. When he pursues her, Addison sets in motion a chain of events that will change his destiny.

A baby boy is born and the midwives attempt to kill it, his mother saves him but five times considers infanticide and when he is eight she makes him leave home for good. No one can look at him without trying to kill him. He has the good fortune to meet one of his own kind shortly after being made to leave home; this man takes him in as a son and they live deep underground only coming out at night to get food or clothes, or sometimes just to be in the fresh air and play in the weather.
I, and I am sure I am part of a majority here, spent most of the book trying to picture what this baby/boy/man looked like. What could be so awful to inspire such an extreme "kill it" reaction in people? And it seems to be particularly the eyes that people can't be allowed to see.
The answer to this question was not what I expected.
One fateful night, our "don't look at him" baby/boy/man who is now a man, meets a girl in the library. She is being is being chased by a bad man whom she outwits. Addison Goodheart is the name of our main character and the girl is Gwyneth. A bond is formed between the two and Addison decides to take a chance and trust her although her face is made up like an evil puppet. Mmm, yes, there are evil puppets in this book. Gwyneth has a social phobia and can't be touched, Addison has his unlookuponable face. It is a match. All he has to do is trust her. Should he? Would you?
I was very much enjoying this story until the end. I like a happy ending, but not one that totally jumps out of the real world and into a cartoonish fantasy.
