This is the 2nd book, following on from the maze runner. The previous book ends where the Gladers thought it was all over - they had solved the maze and been rescued....however all is not what it seemed!! This is a whole new trial, in a whole new environment (the scorch) with completely different challenges. Thomas narrates the story and we learn about new people and locations and the flare as well as following the remaining Gladers.

An entertaining and engaging read - looking forward to book 3 :0)

Having finished vol. 2 of The Maze Runner series, I now understand the backlash against the movies which I read about. While movie one has followed the plot line of the book to a large extent, movie 2 changed it quite a bit. Nonetheless, I enjoyed both the book and the movie but, as usual I prefer the book.

Plenty of action & plot twists and, most of all, a smaller number of already established characters, with just a few new additions, made this volume a faster read for me than vol. 1 in which I had some trouble at first keeping track of who's who.
Looking forward now to vol. 3, which will be a complete surprise, as the production of the third movie sequel has been halted.

I already have the addy of the next reader, so the book will soon travel on.

I wish I could put my finger on why I am not enjoying this series. I think it's a combination of things, the writing I am finding a bit simplistic and (like the first book) I feel like this could have been half the size without losing any of the actual plot. I still don't have a clue what is going on and my brain can't conjure any rational explanation for why these trial are necessary, fingers crossed for the next book to be full of exposition because at this stage I'm just frustrated by the whole mystery. I also really dislike Thomas, well maybe not Thomas himself, but the way he is written just makes him seem so two dimensional, I know he has lost his memory but he seems to have lost his common sense and any form of human emotion as well.

My grumbling aside I did enjoy the plot of this one marginally more than the first book, I think because they had an actual destination to get to this time rather than just being lost in the worlds strangest maze. I also liked the introduction of Jorge and Brenda, do I trust them? Well I think I'd been an idiot to trust anyone in this series, I'll just have to get to the end to find out who works for WICKED and if WICKED really is good or not!

I was eager to start reading this book but found that I didn't really enjoy it - the concept is interesting and I want to know what's going to happen to the characters but I just don't feel there's enough of an emotional arc to keep me interested.
The relationships that Thomas has with Theresa and Brenda seem unrealistic, I think it would be much more interesting to see the development of the relationships between the other Gladers but they seem more just like afterthoughts to be killed off at random at various points to show how mean WICKED are.
I'll read the third book just to see what happens but ultimately have found these books haven't quite lived up to their potential.
