Wow, this was such a brilliant read and a total pageturner. The first sentence " I expected more of a reaction the first time I hit her" had me grabbed instantly and with every chapter told by another person in Oliver's life we learn more and more about him. This is such a clever book and actually touches on a lot of ''taboo'' subjects (back in Ireland in those days) - homosexuality, mixed race kids, unmarried Catholic girls who get pregnant, adultery, Catholic church full stop etc - it packed a lot into a relatively short book but as mentioned it totally had me hooked ! Even the last sentence that Oliver utters had left me wondering, is he really trying to be good or is it one last mean attempt to hold the upper hand ??? Fascinating read indeed ! Will make sure it goes to a good home next !

This was really good. I really enjoyed the different voices throughout. I liked the way that different secrets were revealed as the book went on. In spite of the different narrators and also the story going back and forth in time, this didn't confuse matters. Like kinedi, I thought that there was a lot packed into this slim volume. Thanks very much for passing this on to me.

Like the other journallers before me, I really enjoyed this book. It certainly touched on a good few subjects and the characters were well drawn.

I could not book this book down once I started reading it. Every new chapter, every new voice revealing a new layer and touching on new subjects. A slim book which packed a big punch! Will find a good home to send it on to.
