The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag
3 journalers for this copy...
Precocious doesn't begin to describe 11 year-old Flavia de Luce. She's a master sleuth and chemist, specializing in the formulation of poisons, and fortunately, their antidotes. Set in 1950 rural England, this mystery is the second of a series, but no precursor reading is necessary. It's just really delightful, and definitely not the plodding style of British "thriller" that is all too common. I picked up this hard cover copy from the Little Free Library No. 15708, pictured here, in Marietta, PA.

Picked up at the BCinDC Holiday Party.
Well, this was an odd little book, perhaps because it involves an odd little girl in an equally odd family. Young Flavia is a genius who delights in death. She is fascinated by poisons, but also enjoys dead bodies in general. Needless to say, she is eager to investigate the murder of a puppeteer at the local church.
Honestly, Flavia and her whole family needs some serious family therapy. However, that probably didn't exist in rural England in the 1950's, so they will have to make do. Other than that distraction, the mystery itself is well designed with plenty of red herrings and entertaining bits with the intrepid Flavia poking around where more sober adults would hesitate.
