On my list of top ten books I have ever read. Inspired by the Wilfred Owen poem it is an intensely personal anti-war work written a long time after WW1 but no less powerful for it. John Hilliard returns to the front for his second stint and finds his battalion altered. A newcomer, David Barton has all the charisma and innocence Hilliard feels he lacks, and like the rest of the company John falls under his sway. Tragedy is just a few weeks ahead.
