I'm claiming this from the Biographies of Things bookbox. I like reading medical-mystery books - and as I actually got Lyme disease once, I have a personal interest in this one! (Caught it in time, though the course of antibiotics wasn't fun.)
Later: Fascinating account of a particular microbe with an impressive history, told with respect and some artistic flair. The author begins with a sketch of different types of biographies, from Brief Lives to Emminent Victorians, and gives nods to early biographies-of-things based on insects, salt, beards, and more - including a nod to George Stewart and his "engaging book-length biographies of a storm, a fire, a road and a rock". Yes, I've added several titles to my want-to-read list thanks to this chapter alone!
The book touches on the theory that all advanced life forms came about due to invasions of early cells by early bacteria, creating larger and more complex beings. So not only are we hosts to large numbers of microbes, many of them vital to our existence, but we may actually be made of them in a way - an interesting viewpoint...
I loved the way the author's admiration for his subject comes out in the text, such as when he describes its ability to reproduce while doing other things - this "dueling while making love seems to have no human equivalent". Hee! He also gives a nod to the film "Fantastic Voyage", by way of describing the journey of Bb's travels from host to host through its lifecycle. And he gives due respect to ticks, which are pretty intriguing in their own right.
The reasons behind the fairly-recent discovery of Lyme in humans are provided here, with respect to the parents whose early intervention re their children's strange symptoms helped bring the disease to the attention of the medical community earlier than might otherwise have happened. Symptoms, preventatives and treatments are mentioned - though the author apologizes for switching to the human viewpoint after setting out to write the biography of the germ Bb: "I must respect the fact that if it did not cause Lyme disease, we would not know it existed - and if we did know, few would care. To Bb we are a significant accident but a dead-end host..."
A wonderful example of a biography-of-things!

I selected this book from the Biographies of Things bookbox. Thank you!
I recently read this book because I was interested in Bb and the effects of Lyme disease on the human body. Who knew there was so much to say about the life of a bacterium? I did skim some parts out of boredom.
I put this book back in the Biographies of Things Bookbox.
Small hardcover with dust jacket.
Claimed from the 2023 edition of the Biographies of Things bookbox with thanks.
