This should have been registered last year as I got it in the spring FOL booksale. Oh well, last year was pretty busy.
This is an all-too-real look into the future of mankind - one where the computers have taken over (yeah, I know it brings to mind Terminator but this is not the movie reimagined). This story is told as a compilation of records put together by Cormac, one of the survivors. The horror is there, but there is also a triumph of humanity - even though some of them are not quite human. It is an epic struggle against Archos aka Big Rob - the supercomputer that the humans rise up against. It is a story that turns on the little things - the war is won by the efforts of an elderly Japanese man, a teenaged hacker/prankster, and a little girl horribly disfigured by the robots, among others. This was a quick read and one that, as the best novels do, leaves you thinking about the "what ifs".
Quotes to remember:
By the end of this chronicle, you will know that humanity carried the flame of knowledge into the terrible blackness of the unknown, to the very brink of annihilation. And we carried it back.
You will know that we are better species for having fought this war.
We're real small, here on this rock. We can build our fires, but it's nighttime out there in the universe. A warrior's duty is to face the night and protect his people.
Will be giving this one to Mr BK2B, then will make it available
