The Winter People

I got this paperback from one of the bookstores in LaGuardia airport in New York during a lengthy layover. It's about a remote Vermont town with a dark secret and a string of mysterious deaths and disappearances, and is told from different viewpoints and at different points in time.
The premise: in 1908, a farmer's bereaved wife goes to horrifying lengths to restore the life of their dead child - whose death was itself more mysterious than it seemed, though we don't learn that until farther into the story. As one might expect, attempts to violate nature's laws don't always work out well, with the Came Back Wrong trope in full effect.
I enjoyed the atmospheric bits, which evoked a sense of isolation and chill, as well as of bitter grief and growing dread. And while I found the interweaving of the modern-day subplot with the historical one rather less impressive than the older scenes, overall I found the book nicely involving and creepy.

I left this book, bagged against the elements, on a bench on the Main Street side of Rotary Common at around 2 or so; hope the finder enjoys it!

I have been waiting for this to happen to me for years and finally I found a book on a bench while doing my jogging during my vacation!!! I was so excited and the book was great !!! Not my usual gendra, but despite that fact, I just loved the frightening anticipation and series of events going on! My reading of this book became a new experience knowing that it has been travelling from hand to hand, giving it a second story!!
Love the concept of book travelling, I will definitely go hunting for more and leave this one somewhere new.
