Fourteen-year-old Lily runs away from South Carolina home in 1964 because, well, she's 14. And her father has said cruel things to her about her dead mother Deborah. Lily takes along her black housekeeper Rosaleen, who was jailed and beaten while on her way to register to vote. Some time ago, Lily had found a bag of her mother's possessions, among which was a picture of a black Virgin Mary. Lily and Rosaleen head for the town whose name was on the back of the picture.
On the good side, there are a lot of strong black women characters in this book. It is a feel-good chick lit book from the standpoint of women supporting each other. It is unsettling, though, that the "colorful" black characters act for the personal fulfillment of the immature white female character. And the self-consciously invented religion rings false.
Trade paperback, movie tie-in edition.

I left this book as swag in the geocache called Luce Line State Trail Call of the Wildflowers.
I am giving this book away as part of two book release challenges at BookCrossing: Movie Books; and I'm allergic to A in titles.

We found this while out doing our Wildflowers search. We are newer to geocaching and didn't know things like this existed. My wife decided to take this book since she has not read it yet. Once she is done we will drop it off again.
