(From the publisher.)
Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times –bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most.

Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Received in a surprise Christmas parcel from Plum-Crazy along with Christmas goodies and another book (The Orchard on Fire by Shena Mackay). Thanks very much. Both my husband and I like this author so will probably both read it before passing it on. In fact I may let him have first turn as I have many more books to read than he does....... Also I have to fit my reading in with Plum's monthly themes of course.

My husband started to read this book but couldn't get into it he says. Therefore it will be going back on my shelves until I can fit it into one of Plum's monthly themes (see under Book Talk in the Forum).

REVIEW:- "At around p 100 this story started to make sense and gel after much time-slipping which I always find confusing. Also the book is made up of almost separate stories which I found hard to connect at times. I was so pleased when Pari found Eric and at last had someone to care for her. I empathised with their decision 'not to have more than 2 children-as it raises the odds of heartbreak'. The book also includes a letter (to Mr Markos) that started on p 83 and finished on p 150 which I thought was rather lengthy even if it was to be read after the writer's death!

One quote that will remain with me is 'Beauty is an enormous unmerited gift given randomly and stupidly". I know where the writer was coming from with that. It was awe-inspiring to read of the stoic way in which one character dealt with her disfigurement and how it led her friend to become a plastic surgeon.

All in all a very good story but I would have preferred it to have been told in a more chronological way.

I'm reserving the book until I hear from another bookcrosser as to whether she wants to read it.

To the finder:-
Welcome to bookcrossing -you have found a travelling book. Please make a journal entry now to say where you found the book in case it has been moved. Then, when you have read it, please come back and make a further entry saying whether or not you enjoyed the book and why. It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.
