I have read good reviews of this trilogy, and the book jacket promises that each book stands alone. So.....we shall see!

I got this book at today's Meetup at the Porter Square Panera. (It was a lovely meetup, with some new faces as well as old friends; thanks to all!) I'd read this one some time back, and when nobody else seemed to want it I nabbed it for release in one of the many new LFLs in my town.

While this can be read as a stand-alone book, it works better along with the first and third books in the trilogy. I enjoyed the first book, Annihilation, in a weird, surreal sort of way - and hoped that this one might answer a few questions.

And it did, sort of - but it raised more, adding multiple viewpoints to this very weird situation. The main viewpoint-character here is "Control", a man newly appointed as head of the research department that is trying to investigate Area X. (The former head disappeared along with the previous expedition, but her loyal lieutenant doesn't want to believe she's gone, and is reluctant to cooperate with her new boss.) "Control" has other problems, too - a case that went wrong early in his career has marked him, and his controlling and powerful mother has been engineering his career path ever since.

Through reports and videos from previous expeditions, and through a bizarre array of items and clues left behind in the former head's office, Control begins to get some idea of just how strange things are in Area X - as well as of the higher-ups who may be manipulating the expeditions for purposes of their own. The poor guy has to cope with being the odd man out in his new job, with the very eccentric individuals who work there too, and with the power of whatever's behind Area X. By the end of this book, it seems that, whatever's going on, Area X is winning...

[There's a TV Tropes page for the Southern Reach trilogy, of which this is the second book.]
