The author takes a humorous look at the way food travels through our bodies and answers icky questions like “How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?” and “Can constipation kill you?”

I picked this up at meet-up because it is the one Mary Roach that I have yet to read (as far as I know, anyway). I was cautioned not to read it while eating, but I have a pretty strong stomach and a pretty poor visualization interface with most books, so I am not worried about it making me gag. Not that I need another book on Mt TBR, especially one that came to me via ResQgeek, but life is just that way.

I think when I finally read it, it may be appropriate for the Biographies of Things book box that MaryZee started.

I was cautioned not to read this book at meal time because I would be grossed out. I actually have a pretty strong tolerance for this sort of stuff, so I wasn't worried. The parts of the book I found the most disturbing were the experiments on animals and the story of Dr. Beaumont (even though I had heard it before). I was also reminded of a doctor friend of mine who talked about how fascinating GI medicine and recent developments were, but who had become a cardio thoracic surgeon because his wife told him she didn't want to be married to a "poop doctor." The stigma to this stuff is real.

The aspect of the book I found the most interesting was linguistic in nature, with the medical science which is the basis for certain common expressions.

*Toddlers 'bite off more than they can chew' because incisors develop before molars and round foods such as grapes and hot dogs are discouraged because they can completely seal the wind pipe
*Your voice box normally blocks the pathway to digestion and must move up and out of the way to block your wind pipe -- which is why 'you should not talk with your mouth full' because you could inadvertently choke when food goes down the wrong tube
*Something you can 'sink your teeth into' is more satisfying than mush because when you don't chew you are engaging in a form of sensory deprivation

Also, Mom was right -- spit cleans almost everything -- in fact, enzymes from spit are used in high end detergents
Spit also has antibacterial properties which means the reflex of putting a minor cut or prick on your finger into your mouth is not wrong

And the stuff about Elvis's likely congenital condition which contributed to his death struck me as sad

I snagged this at yesterday's BC in DC gathering. I have other Mary Roach books on my TBR but haven't sought them out yet. I have a love-hate relationship with some food textures so I was hoping this would shed some light on things. Six's review has me a little worried though LOL
