Bought this at a library used book sale.

I read a copy in a bookring in 2007 and had this to say:
Wow! I see what you mean, ealasaidmae, about the characters feeling like friends. I quickly fell in love with Tommy- and the rest of them as well. (I think it's the fact that Tommy, the narrator, loves them so much; you really can't like Tommy and NOT trust him in his love for the others. And it's such a great group.)

Alan's writing style really drew me in at once and made the characters and the world feel so vivid, real, and familiar. I'd go from laughing on one page to anxious and worried on the next. The subject matter was a perfect mix of fun, sexy, and thought-provoking. The whole read was incredibly satisfying and entertaining. I loved every second.

I love Alan's acting, and I'm glad to know his writing has such character as well.

Excellent! I've wanted to read Cumming's novel for some time, so I'm nabbing this from the bookbox. [It remains to be seen if I'll like the book as well as I like his acting, but even if it's only half as much, that'd still be very good indeed!]

Later: I really enjoyed this book, even though the relentless clubbing-and-drugs aspects weren't personally appealing. The ups and downs of Tommy's relationships charmed me despite that, and I adored the way he and his friends constructed their own version of a family. It's randy, hilarious, sweet, touching - thoroughly charming!

Some favorite bits:

Tommy on "making love":

"Making love sounds like a hobby, don't you think? Like a kit you'd buy from B&Q. It sounds like a Marks and Spencer frozen meal. It sounds like death, and if you didn't get it you were out of the picture."

Tommy extolling the virtues of the disabled loo, which "is just so spacious" - which, of course, he values for purposes other than the primary intent of loo-design.

Tommy snarking about stories in which the protagonist dies mid-tale but continues to narrate, apparently having "access to a laptop computer from their afterlife resting place. I hate that."

The bit at the end with the full-page "YES, REALLY" and "WE'RE DOING ONE OF THOSE TIME-JUMP THINGS!".

And absolutely any scene involving little Finn, who ships his dad and Tommy so hard it's priceless.

I did find some of the plot twists exasperating, Tommy being rather lacking in impulse-control at times, but if it weren't for that there'd be very little suspense in the story.

All in all, great fun!
