This is on my list of top ten favourite books of all time. Written in 1927, the story is set on an island in the Hebrides, where an English family and their guests are spending the summer. The two main characters are Mr. Ramsay, a philosopher obsessed with abstract truth, and his generous wife Mrs. Ramsay -- Woolf's "Angel in the House" -- whose passions are family and married life. This is a beautiful, poignant book -- a must read for everyone, but especially married women entering middle age ...
