Slated to be read before the end of the year.

A woman has a baby out of wedlock and is made to wear an A on her clothing, she is made to stand with her infant on the pillory and is reviled and shunned. She will not reveal the name of the father who is respected in public life but reviles himself to the point of death. Pitiful that he didn't have the courage to claim the woman he loved and the child that was his. To make matters worse, the woman's husband, who had been missing for about a year and was presumed lost/dead, shows up as she is standing on the pillory with her infant. He becomes obsessed with revenge on the man who took his wife. It changes him for the worse as well.
The tale is not just a cautionary tale, it is also critical of the society holds a woman to be morally inferior or a witch if she challenges the mores and thoughts of the day.
My favorite line of the book is this: "The soul beheld its features in the mirror of the passing moment."

It should be noted that this book is in poor condition with a lot of underlining and comments, a deteriorating cover, some yellowing from age, and a splash of something spilled on the last page. Nevertheless, the body of the book is still in pretty good condition to be read.
