Releases and caught at The Tbilisi English Book Swap in June 2015
I had gotten this book from the co-founder of the Tbilisi Book Swap, Myrthe, before she left, but had never time to read it - and finally decided that I won't read it while I'm here. So I brought it back to the June 2015 Book Swap, were it was "caught".
I just realized that this is also the first "re-registered" ID. I had registered a German Book twice by mistake, so that i had two ID for it - and on Bookcrossing doesn't allow to delete an ID once it's created. What one can do - and what I did - is to give the second ID to another book and change all book details afterwards. That's why the first journal entry for this book is actually for another, German book...

This book chronicles the experiences of the fictional Gradov family of Moscow from the rise of Stalin through the purges and World War 2. Excellent book. This constitutes Volumes 1 and 2 somehow, there is a spearate Volume 3 printed as a second book called The Winter's Hero. I will release the two together, I hope they stay that way since reading the second book without the first would not be a good approach. This first book, or first two volumes, is the better one. By quite a margin. Nonetheless I still recommend both.
I must have picked this up in June 2015 at the book swap. I read it over the summer but held on to it until I finished the sequel.

Journal Entry 5 by snowman-jim at Kiwi Café in Tbilisi, Tbilisi Georgia on Wednesday, February 3, 2016
This will be released today at the monthly book swap at Kiwi Cafe. Along with its sequel The Winter's Hero. They are best kept together as travel buddies. If they are unclaimed at the swap they will be on the Kiwi book swap shelf.
I didn't notice this at previous BookSwaps, though I had heard great things about it (not just from you guys), so when I saw it on the shelf at Kiwi last night, I grabbed it and the sequel. Given the number of Russian/Soviet literature classes I've taken, I'm surprised I'd never heard of this before!
This is the longest it's ever taken me to finish a book that I liked. The writing (and translation) and beautiful, but a knowledge of Soviet history means I knew the book would be sad, and I was afraid to read it too quickly, lest everyone die all at once. I particularly loved the author's descriptions of Georgia and Georgians--so evocative!
I'll pass this along to my friend Nina next time I see her, as she requested it next.
