This is Solomon Northup's account of his life when as a "free" man in New York, he was kidnapped (he was misled in travelling for work while his family was away) and forced to be a slave for 12 years before escaping. This was written within a year or so after he was once again free and he is well-written, educated man for his time.
Although difficult to hear some parts let alone the whole concept, given being a Northern- born after the Civil Rights Movement with a family which includes multiple races/nationalities (so even topics in The Help can be difficult for me to hear), this is still a great telling for the horrific things he experienced and lived through (not to mention his wife and children without him). Sad to know this was written originally in 1850's and it should have been required, or at least recommended reading by the time I was in middle or high school in late 80's or even when my daughter was in school.
