From a poor farming family, when William Stoner enters university to study agriculture he discovers a love of literature and then a passion for teaching. His life is blighted by an unhappy marriage and a disagreement with a colleague after sticking to his principles. It's very well written but Stoner's miserable and unexceptional life failed to inspire.

My favorite read of these last months, this book is amazingly easy to read and gripping for a simple story about a professor's life. It kept me awake at night and when the book was over I was definitely sad that there were no more pages to read. A great novel!

An excellent book, I am glad that I read it, this silent war raging in Stoner's life due to his own peaceful nature, great descriptions of characters. Now I think I am going to give it to a friend.
