Decent medieval mystery. It seems to me that the reign of Richard the Lionheart has been done before, or maybe I just read too many medieval mysteries. A good historical mystery should be able to transport the reader to that time with enough authentic details to bring the time period to life, but not so many that the story gets bogged down.

Life in London of 1193 is described well enough. The description of the life of the murdered girl and her family rings true, and I found the question of unintended pregnancies interesting. Not quite as enthusiastic about the mystery part, plus I have trouble being interested in royal politics, especially when I know how it ends.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just never really got into it enough to care about the characters. This could quite possibly be because I had not read the first book in the series.
