Isn't it interesting how books find their way back to you when you need them? I saw this on Gory's wishlist and was a little sad I didn't have it anymore, and then....it shows back up! So, heading out to Gory as part of j4shaw's wishlist game!

The book arrived safely today; many thanks! I first discovered the series via The Coal Black Asphalt Tomb, and am glad of a chance to read another installment!

This was another enjoyable visit with odd-couple Berger and Mitry, who manage to maintain a steamy relationship while respecting each other's individuality. Heck, they're even remarkably even-tempered about the other people who keep hitting on them {wry grin}. I love the chemistry between the pudgy Jewish film critic from New York and the statuesque black police officer with a need to sketch grisly crime scenes as therapy. And the setting, a fictionalized south-Connecticut-shore community, provides a mix of old families and new money, with plenty of strife ensuing.

This story focuses on a reclusive local character who's a world-class artist, leading to some fanboy behavior from Mitch when the man invites him in. [Hint: don't get too attached to anyone in that family; as per most mystery series, there WILL be fatalities...] Meanwhile, Desiree is happily dealing with the mundane tasks of being a small-town cop, but has to get back into serious-crime mode when a murder is discovered - and her vainglorious former partner is sent in as the lead detective. (He actually gets some character development here, thanks to careful tutoring by Desiree...)

There's a huge old house - the "hot pink farmhouse" of the title - where the artist lives, and it's just packed with odd levels, secret passages, and other unexpected features. (Mitch gets to try one of those on his first visit!) There are fun pop-culture bonding moments when Mitch meets people who share his interests. And Desiree finds herself intervening on behalf of a juvenile delinquent who's on the cusp of committing a really serious crime; the way she (with Mitch's help) handles that is quite effective.

Mitch and his cats, Desiree and her artwork, plenty of banter - another entertaining tale!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Since part of the story centers on an eccentric sculptor, I left this book, bagged against the elements, on a modern-art piece at MC Square on this warm afternoon. Hope the finder enjoys it!
