This book was bought from a charity shop in Cromer, Norfolk. It is a paperback in very good condition. The cover illustration differs from the one shown on this page.

From the cover:- "Edinburgh in the 1930's. The Lennox family is having trouble with its youngest daughter. Esme is outspoken, unconventional and repeatedly embarrasses them in polite society. Something will have to be done.
Years later, a young woman named Iris Lockhart receives a letter informing her that she has a great-aunt in a psychiatric unit who is about to be released.
Iris has never heard of Esme Lennox and the one person who should know more, her grandmother Kitty, seems unable to answer Iris's questions. What could Esme have done to warrant a lifetime in an institution? And how is it possible for a person to be so completely erased from a family's history?"

REVIEW: I enjoyed this book although I found it a bit hard to get into at first. It was rather disconcerting when (presumably) the author was thinking aloud for Esme and other characters with many unfinished sentences following each other. I felt much sympathy for both Esme and Iris throughout the story. It was a very sad and shocking tale with an unexpected (at least to me) ending.

I am reserving the book for Wal89 as a RABCK after I found it on their wishlist and having received one from them recently.

I enjoyed this book. It was interesting to see how the story developed. I found it a bit strange that there were no chapters in this book and some of the narratives were harder to follow but I liked the way that all the narratives rolled into one. It was a sad and shocking tale but well written.

In the 1930s, a young girl comes back from India with her sister and finds that her eccentricities and refusal to fit in with polite society make her an embarrassment to her family. Jump forward to present-day Edinburgh and Iris gets a letter saying that her great-aunt Esme, of whom she has never heard, is about to be let out of an institution. As the narration skips between past and present, and the memories of Esme's sister Kitty, more of the truth of why Esme was locked away emerges. Horrifying, gripping, fascinating, couldn't put this down.
