Finally managed to get all the way through the book. It's not that it isn't very well written, it's not that the world-building and plot development are never less than thrilling, it's not that the dialogue isn't sometimes hilarious (especially when it briefly veers into meta-commentary on SF) - it's that the protagonist is so tremendously unlikeable (and deliberately so). It was very hard to read. And I also enjoyed it, for various reasons. But Delany's protagonists are often just so exasperating!
