Amazon Editorial Review

Willa Cather's My Ántonia is considered one of the most significant American novels of the twentieth century. Set during the great migration west to settle the plains of the North American continent, the narrative follows Antonia Shimerda, a pioneer who comes to Nebraska as a child and grows with the country, inspiring a childhood friend, Jim Burden, to write her life story. The novel is important both for its literary aesthetic and as a portrayal of important aspects of American social ideals and history, particularly the centrality of migration to American culture.

A classic tale of the American prairie told from the perspective of Jim, an orphan sent to Nebraska to live with his grandparents. He meets the Shemeridas, immigrants from Bohemia, and their daughter Ántonia. It is Ántonia who is central to the story - she has been uprooted and brought to a new country where she learns to love the land despite its hardships. There are five sections with a shifting focus as Jim and Ántonia grow up into adulthood. I think I would have appreciated the story more from Ántonia’s perspective than Jim’s. He seems to self absorbed, especially towards the end. The story is slow moving but the lovely descriptive writing saves it. Overall a good, if not great, novel.
