JK Rowling has a lot to answer for. So many children's stories about evil dictators who can only be defeated (but only over the course of many many books, of course) by seemingly ordinary children who suddenly discover magical powers.

This isn't a great example of the genre - it felt very much churned out, without much care taken over the story (which occasionally stumbles over plot holes) or even the characters. What really annoyed me though is that the story is obviously set in an alternative version of our world, in which all the authors, artists and musicians have slightly different names (or punning variations of their names). Which would be fine, but the authors then proceed to quote poetry by real world poets but attribute it to their alternate world counterparts (e.g. Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken' is attributed to "Bertrand Snow") - surely that's got to confuse any kid who later encounters the poem in their English class?

So yeah, overall a not particularly original idea and not particularly well executed.
