Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir

I picked up this book when I was on a big graphic novel kick.
Even though I can't directly relate to much of anything in this book, I found the writing to be honest, insightful, funny, and a couple of times laugh-out-loud-funny.
From Amazon:
Tomboy is a graphic novel about refusing gender boundaries, yet unwittingly embracing gender stereotypes at the same time, and realizing later in life that you can be just as much of a girl in jeans and a T-shirt as you can in a pink tutu. A memoir told anecdotally, Tomboy follows author and zine artist Liz Prince through her early childhood into adulthood and explores her ever-evolving struggles and wishes regarding what it means to "be a girl."

Picked this up at the meeting today. I enjoy different and quirky graphic novels, so I am looking forward to this one.
This was a super fast read and I enjoyed it. Nothing really surprised me and, as a girl, I could relate to a fair amount of Liz's experiences. I played with Star Wars figures and really thought that Barbie and Ken were creepy. Self identity is something most people struggle with at some point in their lives - it is a shame that society seems to have such a hard time embracing individuality and that it takes so long for people to realize that there are no hard and fast rules about being yourself.
And I loved that she loved Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters so much! I still have my Egon action figure :)

Picked up at the April meeting, and have already begun to read it!
Taking to the May "Journeys" meeting, where it is also a good fit. I dived right into this one and really enjoyed it!

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing May meet-up. I read the first few pages and have the same opinion on dresses, so I can tell this book is for me.
I pretty much read this in one sitting. I could relate with a lot of stuff in this book. I played with the exact same toys when I was a kid. I had that Egon action figure and all of the Ghostbusting gear (ah, my beloved proton pack). I still read comics. I remember hanging out with the boys at elementary school, too. Thankfully, I wasn't hassled like Liz Prince was, so it was really maddening to read about her experiences. You don't have to like pink and dresses to be a girl. Your identity is your own. Excellent book.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing July meet-up.
Picked this up at the get together! And read yesterday.
This was a very interesting read. Some things I could relate to, and other things were very different from how I saw the world when I was a kid. I was fortunate enough to not be bullied for my quirks, but I did know more than one individual who was bullied for being a "tomboy" whether they identified with being a tomboy or not. Some of the author's experiences were nearly identical to things they went through.
Thanks for the interesting read!

Taken to get together
OK - I cam home with WAY too many books. But, my books are organized now by when I got them.
Somehow, this got lost. Weird cover but I sure liked the book. Nice commentary about growing up being different and how that impacts your life.
I am taking this to the October meeting at Cravings Restaurant.

Quick and funny read. It got a little repetitive though, it felt like every chapter was just a different situation of how she was different for acting like a male and getting bullied because of it.
As a self-professed tomboy, I feel lucky to not have been bullied when I was in my preteen years.

picked up at the Calgary July meeting
Saw a lot of myself in this character. Glad I didn't have to deal with the crap she put up with during her school years.
Picked this book up at the September meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers, held at Cravings Market Restaurant.
I grew up in a time when girls had no option to wear pants and jeans weren't even a thing. In the cold Calgary winters, we wore snow pants to school under our dresses.
So, coming from that generation, I have a hard time relating to the choices that can be made by young women now. That said, I did love the book and cheer that my grand daughters will be able to express themselves in what they wear, the sports they play and can choose to follow their hearts in love.

Caught this book at the monthly book crossing meeting at the Cravings Market Restaurant.
Loved this book, a great read about a tomboy who is just learning where she fits in. Quite relatable for many tomboys out there I'm sure, myself included.
