A romantic suspense novel, first edited in 1965.

"Beautiful Anne Wicklow, tragically widowed, finds herself relentlessly pursued by the unseen menace that haunts the steaming bogs at Ballyglen...
Hatred and Peril were her nearest neighbors, beckoning with false smiles from turbulent sea on one side and the treacherous bogs on the other..."

"Beautiful, widowed Anne Wicklow thought she was fortunate to find employment in the ancient, isolated castle high on an Irish cliff.
Once inside the gloomy castle, Anne discovered that evil walked beside her in the drafty halls... for someone in that strange household was determined to destroy her charge, lovely young Maurie, who stood between a murdered and a fortune.
By protecting the girl, Anne put herself in mortal danger. To save her own life she had to uncover a ghastly secret... even if it meant betraying the man she loved."

I really enjoy a classic gothic story and “The Beckoning” has all the necessary ingredients – a creepy house in a bleak area, a dysfunctional family and even a mad woman, who speaks truths in the middle of her gibberish.

Recently widowed Anne Wicklow returns to Ireland to serve as governess in a decrepit castle in a wild seaside village. The man of the house is locked up on the upper floor, an invalid after suffering an attempted murder; the beautiful, but eerie, stepmother seems to have control of everything, against the wishes of the gambling son and the child-woman daughter. The castle is steeped in secrets and, when the nurse is murdered, Anne starts to fear for her own life and sanity.

The author is very good at creating a creepy setting, making you doubt the character´s good intentions. I trusted no one in this story! The supernatural elements were carefully weaved and made sense in the ending. Nothing seemed too farfetched. A really enjoyable read!
