Cult of the Dead Cow
Joseph Menn
If you happened to read the book by Cliff Stoll entitled The Cuckoo'sEgg and, like me, found it fascinating, then you probably will appreciate this book as well.
Both books concern the hacking of computer systems. The Stoll book concerned the efforts to find the people who were doing damage to major computer systems belonging to the government, large corporations and universities.
The people in this book are far more mature in their aims. They attempt to break into "secure" systems with the plan to contact the owners of those systems to warn them of vulnerabilities of which they may not be aware.
The book starts as a story of this group who wish to do good and builds from there. The book follows the evolution of the Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc) through the years and tells of the many projects that were entered into their efforts.
It might be somewhat of a surprise, but I will let you read the book on your own, however I will throw in a few names and organizations that are in this book to help you whet your interest.
What do the following have in common?
Hong Kong Blonds
Amnesty International
Apple
Microsoft
WikiLeaks
Russian Election Interference
Bradley (Chelsea) Manning
Edward Snowden
and, toward the end of the book, Psychedelic Warlord
If you cherish the security of the Internet, you might want to read this.
I passed this book on to a friend who I felt might appreciate it. If that friend chooses to return that book to me, I will look for another direction in which to release this book into the wild.
