I read it. I liked it. I kept it. I'm releasing it.

From the Publisher:
Carved on the trunk of the mighty copper beech that embraces the school yard in Shancarrig are declarations of love, hope, and identity - the youthful dreams of the children who played there. Now grown, yet shaped by their years in the schoolhouse, they lead different lives. The Copper Beech is about eight of these dreamers. From Ryan's Hotel to Barna Woods, where the gypsies came each year, from Nellie Dunne's sweet shop to Father Gunn's church, the tenor of life in this small Irish village is outwardly placid and uneventful. Some, like Nessa Ryan, in search of passion, would say deadly dull. But behind the calm exterior, serenity fades into unexpected drama: Maddy Ross has a secret love; Eddie Barton, a surprising friendship; and the Darcys, the glamorous newcomers, find a curious partner in poor Maura Brennan. In Shancarrig, where the river runs around the great rock for which the town is named, human life flows in all its variety. Lives intertwine just as names crisscross on the trunk of the copper beech. At the cottages where the Dunnes live in poverty; the grand house of Leo Murphy; the Kellys', near the school; Dr. Jims's, on The Terrace - nothing is as it seems. With humor, warmth, and a ruthless eye for the ironies of self-delusion, Maeve Binchy uncovers the secrets hidden in each person's heart, showing us that extraordinary stories can be found anywhere, if only one knows where to look.

This was my second Maeve Binchy. I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed at all! Her characters are so realistic and captivating. I think she could turn anyone's life, however ordinary, into a very interesting story... :)
This book has a somewhat different style: throughout its pages, we are in fact being told several stories, separated in chapters, each one relating to the life of a different character; however, as it all happens in the same small village, and as everybody is part of everybody else's lives, these characters are also present in the other chapters, as part of the "background", and all the stories are connected by the old beech tree of the school house.
I really enjoyed the reading, thanks again Fantasma! :)

The book will be sent tomorrow to BookHaven01.

Journal Entry 8 by -BookHaven- on Thursday, October 13, 2005

Well,I confess,I interecepted the book as it was changing hands but I'm already reading it and will give it to BlossomU as soon as I finish it,which should be sometime this week.

Journal Entry 14 by terpsicore from Algés, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Monday, January 9, 2006
Good read as usual.
I liked the way the separate stories intertwine.Somehow I felt this book was "darker" than her other books, more dramatic.I don't think there is usually so much death and misery.Even though everything turns out allright in the end...
Will pass it on to BlossomU at the next meetup.

Journal Entry 15 by BlossomU on Sunday, January 15, 2006
Book is with me since wednesday, I just forgot to Journal entry it, very sorry! I finished it and it was such an easy fast read, Binchy really has the hang of being readable, of sketching real characters you care about - not always admire or like, but always quite real. By terpsicore´s comments I was expecting something sadder, it was not, some of it was very happy indeed. In fact the end might have been a bit too artifically sweet in all its details to me. Thanks for the ray fantasma will contact elhurricane at once.

Journal Entry 16 by BlossomU on Monday, January 16, 2006
Sent to ElHurricane today.

As easy and enjoyable read. I enjoyed learning about all the characters from both their point of view and also from the people they lived with in Shancarrig.

I look forward to reading more Maeve Binchy in future.
