For some reason, I have resisted reading this book for a while but I found a copy of it in a little free library so I thought I should give it a try. I had mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I know that people deal with grief in their own way. And I know that it takes both physical and mental toughness to hike the Pacific Coast Trail so I respect anyone who does it. But what annoyed me several times throughout the book was how utterly unprepared the author was to undertake this trip. It's no exaggeration to say that her own ignorance and lack of preparation could have caused her death. Her book has inspired many people to hike the PCT so I hope that they choose to prepare more thoroughly than she did. If not, I hope that they choose to hike the Appalachian Trail instead, which has campgrounds and towns closer together and has more people on the trail.

On a minor editing note, it drives me crazy when people use "discrete" instead of "discreet." As a writer, you should know the difference between the two and if you don't, your editor should catch that error.
