This book is about more than place names; it talks about the history of map-making, and how knowledge (or lack thereof) affected discoveries through the last two millennia. I found it quite engaging.
Offered on Book relay 2/1/04.

What an intriguing book with some wonderful drawings/antique maps! Looking forward to getting into it - as soon as that TBR stack allows!
Thanks for this nice bookrelay,jamesmum!

I like the concept of this book - and all the amazing sources of names and name changes.
(my husband and son each studied Russian and we have visited St.Petersburg/Leningrad, seen changes in street names there, Mariinsky Theater, etc.)
Even our new baseball stadium in San Francisco has already gone from PacBell to SBC Park!
Knowing I won't be able to do this book justice, I'm sending it to lovemylife as a surprise!

Thanks, JDT. the books arrived today. It looks very interesting, but will take a little time to read. Love the cover.
I've decided to send this very interesting book to New Zealand. Someone is collecting for an M-Bag and I'm thinking this book might me appreciated by someone there.
I got this box of books today. Since it was the last set I was waiting on, the Mbag (or perhaps a quicker method) will be going out to New Zealand on Monday.

Sending in an M-bag to FutureCat for the New Zealand Convention.
A huge sack of books arrived today - too late for the convention, unfortunately, but they'll still be greatly appreciated by the Christchurch Bookcrossers, and a few might end up travelling over to Australia for the Brisbane convention in June.
I'm sure I've claimed far more than my share of the m-bag now, but this one just looks so fascinating I have to read it!
Many thanks lovemylife, and nekki!

Just as interesting as it promised to be! It was a bit US-centric at times, and not particularly well-organised, but it made up for it by being so packed with fascinating little snippets of history and geography. My only real complaint is that I would have liked the old maps to be reproduced more clearly - it's impossible to make out any of the detail of placenames etc on them :-(

Well..this book was more or less a collection of map and place name trivia - interesting to dip into but not really a detailed look at either old maps or place-names.
