Bitter Medicine (V. I. Warshawski)

Paretsky's books are always fun to read, and this is one of her better ones. There's some interesting medical details in here, as well as the usual plot twists and quick thinking by Warshawski. It's also a good look at the decisions faced by hospital administrators looking too greedily at their bottom lines.
Paretsky uses a great line as the title of her first chapter: "The Land Beyond O'Hare." It really stuck in my head. If Chicagoans don't use it to describe the remoter suburbs, they're wasting a great opportunity. It could only work where there's a physical barrier (like Lake Michigan) forcing expansion in one direction. Although there are quite a few places, like the Twin Cities, where the phrase "Outside the Beltway" has the same effect.
But that's just one person's opinion. Future readers, what do YOU think of this book?

I am delighted JudySlump612 offered this to the Medicine Chest Bookbox! Wonderful book. Here's my review from earlier:
1998 mystery with V.I. Warshawski. Unfortunately it is still topical and true.
When a young high risk pregnant friend of VI's goes into labor way out in the boonies, Vic follows the phone advice of the 17 year old's obstetrician and takes Consuelo to the nearest high level neonatal emergency room. Consuelo and her child do not survive. And then comes the death of Consuelo's other doctor who went to the hospital to help with the case. And Lottie's clinic suffers a disturbance and medical files disappear. Warshawski must unravel the links between bad medical practice and profits quickly, before the carnage spreads further.
