Happy to find this intriguing-looking book at the coffee house!
(definition of the title: Slammerkin - a loose dress or a loose woman)
racy, bawdy novel -set in 18th century working-class London - written with literary intelligence!

WOW.....This book is brilliant, "unputdownable". I loved the fact that i was reading a "true" story. Poor Mary starts her life sadly and it's downhill from there! Can't really say anymore or i'll spoil it for you ;o)

Born in 1748 in working class London, Mary Saunders lusts for linen, lace and a shiny red ribbon that leads her to a life of prostitution - and a freedom unknown to virtuous young women. There are however, 3 rules of the London streets that she knows she must'nt ever forget: Never give up your liberty; Clothes make the woman; Clothes are the greatest lie ever told.

"Slammerkin is a fiction, inspired by the surviving facts of the real Mary Saunders life...."

So I apologize for not journaling this when I got it but I thought that I did! At any rate, this was a book that I really wanted to stop reading because I knew that it was all going to end badly, but just couldn't put down. I really understand where Mary is coming from...don't we all want something more? I'm just really glad that I live in a time that gives me the opportunity to better myself without having to resort to prostitution or anything like that! I'll be sending it on as soon as I'm able. Thanks for sharing!!! ^_^

Got this through the mail yesterday and can't wait to get started on it. I've not read anything by Emma Donoghue before, but have had her work on my wishlist for quite a while. Thanks Auglaise! Will journal when I finish.

Journal Entry 9 by Winterson from Peacehaven , East Sussex United Kingdom on Monday, November 22, 2004
I absolutely loved this book! Finished last week but have lost internet connection at home so this is the first chance I've had to journal.
This book is beautifully written and I'll certainly be adding some more of her work to my wishlist. I agree with Auglaise - you almost want to stop reading because it is so hard to watch Mary's downfall. The way you know from the start that it all ends badly creates a real pull towards the end of the book, and at times I found myself fighting it. I didn't want this one to end! Some really well-written characters and a wonderful insight into some of the oppositions at work - rural vs city life, male vs female, rich vs poor.. all the time echoed by the clothing that represents them.
Beautiful.
Off to psychobaby.

Sent to Psychobaby today. Enjoy!

+I didn't get round to journaling this bok when it arrived - mostly because I couldn't put it down! This is one of the best books i've read this year, and I will definitely be buying a copy to add to my personal collection. Not ready to send it to the next person on the ray.

I started this book at 9 p.m. last night and finished reading it just a few minutes ago. I could barely put it down, even though I knew there wouldn't be a happy ending. The protagonist could be repelling, but I found her oddly fascinating.

Will send on to its next stop.

Journal Entry 20 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Thursday, May 19, 2005
I am not sure why I signed up for this ray; I didn't even know what the word "slammerkin" meant until I had the book in my hands. I must have heard good things about it as the book surely deserves it. I am so glad that I joined in this ray, because I loved the story.
I don't think I would have been able to like the main character, Mary, if anyone had just given me a description, but when I read the book I really liked her and, in a way, identified with her. I don't see myself making the choices she made, but I liked the way she handled herself. So many women in books have what I consider a "Cinderella" flaw about them meaning they are kind, sweet, and good natured regardless of the circumstances. I was glad to see Mary took a more realistic attitude toward life and her reactions towards people. For instance, at one point, Mary can't control her facial expression when someone speaks of being better than her. I would have been disappointed had Mary taken it gracefully.
This was one of those books that I had a hard time putting down. I was so eager to see what was going to happen, but at the same time not wanting the story to end. I wanted to continue keeping company with Mary and the other vivid characters portrayed in the story.
I will be sending this book off tomorrow to the next participant on the list.

Journal Entry 23 by sekach00 from Saint Clair Shores, Michigan USA on Wednesday, June 1, 2005
All I can say is WOW. What a powerful story. I kept hoping through out the story that something would go right for Mary. She was so young to be put through what she endured. I think if she had a different mother she would have turned out fine. I couldn't stop reading this book and found myself in tears by the end. Thanks for the oppurtunity to read such a powerful book!

-I'm P.M.'ing the next person on the list and will mail as soon as I get their address!

Received this in the mail today. I have a couple of other bookrings here, but will get to this one as soon as I can.

9/18/05 update - Sorry I've been sitting on this one so long. I've been caught up in book rings and other books this summer, but am ready to start on this tonight or tomorrow. I had pm'd Caffcaff way back when about this book, and will be continuing the ray soon.

Journal Entry 26 by wingmaryzeewing from Taneytown, Maryland USA on Thursday, September 22, 2005
I love well-written historical fiction! It can completely transport you to a different place and time, as this book did. It was a quick read, which I couldn't put down. It follows Mary from the time she's a young child living with her mother and step-father, tells about events in her early childhood which changed her life. It follows through her early adolesence, showing events and attitudes which conspire to change her life. It follows as her life changes through outside events, and later due to her own actions. It's based on a "real" story, but don't ruin it and read the notes at the end until after the story is finished.

Thanks for sharing this one, JDT and Caffcaff. Will be sending out on a new bookray soon.

Got this 9/27. I peeked and didn't want to stop reading. But I exercised restraint and finished my current bookring slecetion so it could go on its merry way. Then I devoured this book. Maybe I'm jaded but the racy parts didn't bother me as much as knowing that Mary never made the connection between sex and love. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the limited choices she saw in life. It made me appreciate mine. But I am not sure her three rules apply less now than then. Thanks so much for sharing the book! It's off to Alaska in the morning mail.
