Sir Walter Scott is one of Scotland's most famous writers and he played a significant role in shaping how you and I, and people all around the world, think of Scotland. This book was published to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Waverley and the 10th anniversary of Edinburgh's designation as a UNESCO City of Literature. It celebrates Scott's amazing life and career and explore the wit and wisdom on the 'Wizard of the North'.

I, of course, have heard of Sir Walter Scott. I have often travelled to Waverley Station which was named after his novel. I couldn't tell you how many times I've walked passed the Scott Monument although I've never climbed it and I've visited Abbotsford, his house in the Borders. He is hugely important to Scotland's history but I'm ashamed to say, I have never read one of his novels even although I actually own two of them. This is a fantastic little book, full of interesting facts which may actually peruade me to get them off my shelf.

A surprise indeed! Thank you so much earthcaroleanne, I didn't expect it! And yes, I've heard of Sir Walter Scott, too. I've seen the Scott Monument while in Edinburgh (2008) and one of my favourite Scottish musicians - Roddy Woomble - has a song called 'Waverley steps' (one of my faves of his!). But just like you, I haven't read any of Scott's novels yet so this may be a great start indeed!

A sort of in between read, concise but very informative nonetheless. I enjoyed the "did you know?" parts with the information you wouldn't easily find elsewhere.

Now it's time to look for the works of Scott in my local library!
