Oh dear, oh dear. I started reading _The Binding Chair_ last night, stayed up too late and was trying to read slowly so it would last longer. I'm not done yet and feel sorry for twhoever's going to be driving in front of me on the way home. It's Friday, I can stay up and read all night if I want. Moo-hoo-hahahahahahahah....

This is the kind of book that makes me wish for some kind of exotic physical idiosyncrasy. One of the main characters has bound feet that are fetishized eight ways from Sunday. By the time I finally fell asleep last night, I wanted two things. First, I promised myself that I'd make an appointment for a full press pedicure. Second... well, when I finally went to sleep I dreamed vivid dreams about having a cat's tail, one that I could wrap around the leg of a chair I was sitting in or twitch when I was curious about something or wave in slow figure-eights when I was bored or puff up when I got mad. I haven't had that particular dream since I read _Even Cowgirls Get the Blues_ and was SOO disappointed when Sissy got corrective surgery.

Kathryn Harrison's prose makes me feel the same way I did when a friend of mine and I went to an orchid show. We walked in the door and were hit by this warm wall of tropical scent and all of these incredibly detailed flowers. You couldn't get away with looking any of them quickly. If you stalled even for a moment you were there for at least ten minutes studying veins and striations and lips and all kinds of details that I wasn't aware had the ability to compel my attention for any length of time. Yeah, the environment might've been sort of oppressive but I didn't notice it at the time, or if I did I didn't care. Harrison's writing is pretty densely atmospheric and prying myself loose felt a little like I was coming up for a breath of fresh air after a long time underwater, but that doesn't mean that I'm not looking forward to further immersion.
