My first A. Smith. It was one of those book that doesn't exactly have a beginning-middle-end, and I finnished it and my first reaction was "What is the point of this book?", but when I thought better about it, I noticed that I really got to like Prof. Dr. Moritz-Maria. And that's enough purpose for a book in my book. He was a mix between Mr. Magoo, that scientist from Return to the Future, the guy from a Brilliant Mind and Baron Munchausen. LOL!

i'm afraid the only atractive thing in this book as far as i'm concerned is its title. although i have my difficulties with postuguese being regarded as an abscure language and am unimpressed when it is mispelt. the remains of my linguistic soul were disgusted by the inaccuracy of anyone in a gaeltacht speaking old irish, which was lost centuries ago. ok, i know this is a piece of unuseful academic knowledge, but i had to write it down... and for your enlightment i must say i once met a person who was doing a phd on the the resaon why the genitive case was lost in modern irish, and he was a very interesting teacher, not prone to stereotyping at all!
as for the rest of the book, i found it only a bunch of overused stereotypes. and i do demand a lot more of an academic novel, because i'm a big fan of the genre.
finally, the whole point is - was it supposed to be funny?
let's see who the next victim shall be *** evil grin *** hello, tho?...

I am the next victim, thanks Tho! I read a couple of McCall Smith´m other books ( with Precious Ramotswe the first (lady) detective in Botswana) and enjoyed those a lot. I will probably read it (relatively quickly!). Thanks again, Tho!

The title page calls this book an entertainment, and that is what it is, a shameless tongue-in-cheek arrya of little stories of eccentric German professors. Fun, but quite different ( and more shallow) than the Precious Ramotswe books. Thanks tho! Book will be returned as soon as possible.
