I'm really excited to share this graphic novel with my fellow bookcrossers. The art is vibrant and the story really resonated with me.
From Amazon:
"Jin Wang starts at a new school where he’s the only Chinese-American student. When a boy from Taiwan joins his class, Jin doesn’t want to be associated with an FOB like him. Jin just wants to be an all-American boy, because he’s in love with an all-American girl. Danny is an all-American boy: great at basketball, popular with the girls. But his obnoxious Chinese cousin Chin-Kee’s annual visit is such a disaster that it ruins Danny’s reputation at school, leaving him with no choice but to transfer somewhere he can start all over again. The Monkey King has lived for thousands of years and mastered the arts of kung fu and the heavenly disciplines. He’s ready to join the ranks of the immortal gods in heaven. But there’s no place in heaven for a monkey. Each of these characters cannot help himself alone, but how can they possibly help each other? They’re going to have to find a way—if they want fix the disasters their lives have become.
American Born Chinese is a 2006 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature, the winner of the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: New, an Eisner Award nominee for Best Coloring and a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year."

Bringing to December bookcrossing meetup in Calgary.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing December meet-up. Love a good graphic novel and the subject matter appeals to me, too.
I found it really uncomfortable to read the Chin-Kee parts. I know it's just a parody, but it's still presents the stereotypes that have no place in the world. Aside from that, I really enjoyed the rest of the graphic novel. The art was cute and two other stories were funny and relevant.
Passing this book on to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing January meet-up.
Picked up at the January meeting.
Taking to the April Identity meeting. This graphic novel had a fun twist and really took me back to my childhood, sometimes not in a comfortable way.

Grabbed this at the Bookcrossing meeting today - looking forward to reading it!
I sat down and read this graphic novel in one sitting this morning. Like locker-monster, I found the Chin-Kee portions to be uncomfortable. The art style he was illustrated in juxtaposed with the art style of the other characters made the experience even more uncomfortable. I enjoy that level of detail in a graphic novelist - using the art to maximize emotional response.
I loved the parts about the Monkey King and what he says to Jin on pg 223 was fantastic!
I will definitely seek out the other titles, "Saints" and "Boxers", by Gene Luen Yang.
Thank you for sharing with the group, BookyMcBooks!

Grabbed at get together and read today. There's some good lessons in here. I liked the artwork and how the stories moved back and forth and connected.
Thanks for the interesting read.

Taken to get together
Picked up at the July meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers.
I am glad I stuck with this graphic novel until the end. I, too, felt very uncomfortable with some of the caricatures, until the conclusion.
And, minerva101, you made me go back and read page 223! Thanks!

Taking to the November meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers at Cravings Market Café, to go home with a new reader.
My daughter brought this home from the November meetup.
Somehow, this got on the wrong shelf. Wait so long, then so short to read. Confused at first but then I figured it out. It had some really thought provoking things that came out that I am sure will keep coming back to me. Ditto on Pg. 223.
I am taking this to the December meetup at Cravings.
Picked this up at the monthly book crossing meeting at Cravings Market Restaurant.
