Art history is too often dominated by the stories of great men, but here Susan Vreeland gives us the life of Artemisia Gentileschi. It's convincing not only as a portrait of its time and place, and of a woman in a career and society fundamentally hostile to women, but also in its portrayal of an artist's process, ambitions and frustrations.

Artemisia Gentileschi is brought to life in this wonderful novel about her. Raped as a young girl and then put through humiliation and torture during the trial of the rapist, her father then arranges a marriage for her. Through all her difficulties her passion for painting shines through. Although the author admits in the introduction to having slightly altered the historical facts to improve the story, it's obvious that Vreeland loves the art and that the struggles that Artemisia went through are true to life. Loved this.
