Based on the true story of Salva Dut, founder of Water for South Sudan (formerly known as Water for Sudan).
WFSS's website includes a link to an interview with Linda Sue Park and Salva Dut.
I'll count this for kiwiinengland's 666 challenge: this is book 1 for Africa (South Sudan).

This book takes place in two different times and follows the stories of two young people.
In 1985, eleven-year-old Salva is at school when his village is attacked. His teacher urges the students to flee into the bush - when the civil war raging throughout Sudan reaches a village, no one is safe, but young boys are particularly at risk. This is the beginning of Salva's long journey as a refugee, which takes him from Sudan to Ethiopia, then to Kenya, and eventually to the US.
In 2008, eleven-year-old Nya spends most of her day, every day, working to get water for her family. During the rainy season, she walks for hours to the pond and back. During the dry season, her family moves to the lake, where Nya must dig a hole and wait hours for muddy water to seep into the bottom.

Since this book was written, South Sudan has gained its independence. Clean safe drinking water remains one of the most basic challenges the people of South Sudan face on a daily basis.
Reading this book makes me glad I was able to contribute in a small way to one of CakeWrecks's campaigns to raise funds for Charity:Water.
