As recommended by Alexander McCall Smith at a recent talk, he affectionately retailed us with stories about Bertie, Irene et al. Looks like a gentle funny series..,
(23/11/14) What a joy, to start a new AMS series. This 1st episode, first published as a daily installment in The Scotsman, introduces the residents of 44 Scotland Street. There are similarities with the The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, the warm wit and intelligence and gentle psychology and philosophy, but McCall Smith has given himself a much wider palette of people and situations to work with here. The main story revolves around the identification, loss and recovery of a possible Peploe (or Peploe question-mark), a valuable find in an otherwise unsuccessful art gallery. But on the way we get snippets of pure gold from the residents and their friends and associates. For example; 6 year-old Bertie and his pushy mother, an incident at the kindergarten and subsequent therapy. Each of the 110 small daily news snippets are both light, insightful and richly imagined little vignettes of un-typical life in Edinburgh. As I said, an absolute joy!
I heard that this was an address that McCall Smith used to live at, now that would be fun :)
