I bought this book, along with another one by Sue Grafton, on the Internet auction last week. I'm going to add it to my Christmas gift for someone here on bookcrossing (someone who's got it on their wishlist) but I'd like to read it first.

This was my first encounter with the author and I must admit that I was a little apprehensive when I first picked up the book. I was afraid that beginning with the letter "T" which is nearly at the end of the alphabet would spoil the entire series for me. Fortunately, it didn't happen as each book may be read separately (or so it seems).
The story started slowly for my liking but was engaging nonetheless and soon enough I found myself reading with anticipation. There was a good deal of mystery and suspense but also a touch of Kinsey Millhone's background which allowed me to know her better (of course I could do without knowing what she has eaten and when - hehe - but then her past and present relationships with other characters only added up to the plot, I think). All in all, I enjoyed the book enough to be on the lookout for the rest of the series. Recommended.

Another outstanding book. In a little change to her writing style, this book was written from both Kinsey's and Solana's perspective, which worked very well. This time Kinsey is pitted against fraudsters; some are much more dangerous than others but all present the same basic characteristics: the single-minded pursuit of how to get something for nothing with a total disregard for how their actions affect others. This book is difficult to put down especially towards the end and the final resolution.

I found this a gripping read. The wasn't much I didn't understand apart from the Estate Agents jargon. All the stuff about the medical treatment sounds like hard work sorting it out.
Thanks.
I'll PM greenbadger to see if she's accepting parcels.

Kinsey Millhone's elderly neighbour, Gus, takes a fall and Kinsey does the background check on Solana Rojas, hired to nurse him - but she doesn't look deeply enough. Gus is in serious trouble and Kinsey will have to use all her resources to help him. Could she have met her match in Solana? Meanwhile she has cases on the go, a car accident that wasn't all it seems. This is a real page turner, with high suspense all the way to the end.

In all of these books, Kinsey certainly does find herself in predicaments in the course of solving a case - in this book more than one case. The story line about Solana was particularly gripping and I really could not see how she was going to resolve the situation! I found this hard to put down, especially towards the end. Another great read by Grafton.

This arrived while we were in the middle of a move (actually we still are), so I carefully tucked it - somewhere - and then spent the last few days trying to locate it! I finally unpacked the right suitcase a few hours ago - I had checked through the things in it and didn't find it so thought I hadn't put it where I thought I had, until I actually emptied the bag completely. As I just finished reading S is for Silence yesterday, the timing was in fact not bad, although there was a lot of wasted fretting in the meantime. Now things are pretty busy, so it may be a bit before I can get this read (and S is for Silence) on their way. Meanwhile thanks for the card and good wishes. All the very best to you and yours, wishing you a happy and HEALTHY new year!

This is the second book in the series that starts with a slightly different format -almost screenplay like, with an introduction to the characters involved in the drama, rather than start with Kinsey introducing herself. Here we get to know Solana Rijos and her ethics from the get-go, and wait for Kinsey to catch up with us.
The drama itself was tough - maybe because I'm no spring chicken myself, but I found the premise of someone being so at the mercy of a caretaker quite upsetting. I had to put the book down at some point and pick it up the next day.
On a very different note, I was a bit sorry to see how quickly Cheney was dispatched...
It was nonetheless a good read, and I truly appreciate the possibility of reading all of these thanks to the bookcrossing spiral.

I think I enjoyed the side mysteries more. The main villain here is a bit too stereotypical for me, with a layer of deranged on top. The parallel voice technique continues and offers lots of relevant background info that might have been hard to come to light otherwise. Things tie up neatly, maybe too neatly - even the random renovation site becomes relevant, so many Chekov guns in here..

Thanks for sharing, this one will soon travel again :)
