Received this ARC in the mail today. Can't wait to read it!
This is one of the BEST books I have read in a very long time. If I could give it a better rating than 10 I would.
The story is being told by an adult, named Kevin. When Kevin is fourteen he witnesses the death of his small brother in a terrible home accident, which his father blames him for. His mother has been overcome with grief. To help with the healing process both Kevin and his mother are sent to Medgar, Kentucky, deep in the Appalachian Mountains, to stay with Kevin's grandfather. He becomes friends with a local boy named Buzzy. The sub story of this novel is the strip mining that is taking place and destroying the local forests. Buzzy witnesses a brutal murder, with dire circumstances.
This author's writing is simply wonderful. You can actually put yourself in the places he describes. I was sorry to see this story end.
I will be sharing this with friends before making it available.
03/22/15 The book is home again and is now available.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
"Did you carve this?"
Tas did not turn. "Yes," he said, reluctantly. "I have to leave it."
"But, Tas, why?"
Tas squared his shoulders as though firming some resolve. But still he did not turn. "Because the shepherd said that it could only be used once. Thats why I can't get the pipe to play that song-or any song. I've used the magic." He took a deep breath and went on. "And he said that once I found the magic I had the pass the pipe on." he paused and then he did turn, a scamp's humor in his long brown eyes. "It's going to be a long winter. I'm going to leave it here for someone else to find." "Snowsong" by Nancy Varian Berberick
