Shakespeare's Landlord: A Lily Bard Mystery

Received from rainbow3 for Halloween 2014. A new Charlaine Harris series for me only started this year, but one I will endeavour to follow. However, as this is book 1 of the series it may well jump up the tbr anyway!
From Fantastic Fiction:
"Lily Bard is a loner. Fiercely protective of her independence, she concentrates on her karate skills and her work as the proprietor of a cleaning and errand-running service, and pays little attention to the town around her. When her landlord is murdered, though, she looks like the prime suspect. Uncovering the real killer may be the only way to prove her innocence, and Lily realizes that she must focus on the other residents of tiny Shakespeare. Her job gives her easy access to people's private lives, and she begins to snoop, finding plenty of skeleton-filled closets, and exposing herself to the unwanted attentions of a murderer."

Included in a Halloween 2014 parcel I passed onto Flutterbies9 who inundated with lovely books has this in a to-be-read book pile. Don’t worry I know you will get to it in time.
Not as cosy as expected, which truly was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the wary tension that reigned throughout. Surviving an desperate situation and it’s painful aftermath, a few years in the past, Lily Bard is a character who traverses the streets of Shakespeare with a decidedly aware determination. She is prickly! Either blunt or closed mouthed to the point of rudeness. Which is both refreshing and memorable; the darkness is measured and the humour dry, this is a great start to a new series.
It’s the one of the most pleasing feelings known to a reader, the knowledge that there are more of this series awaiting my attention. And even better, I have them on hand — Joy!

Indeed, on tbr and awaiting a time in the New Year when I can start this series with enthusiasm (currently reading books for Christmas, Book Club and NSS release).
Finally got around to starting this series. I only have the first two before I come to temporary halt but that is a good start!
I though this was a good introductory book for this series. Lily was an intriguing character and I think the murder was well thought out. Lily's background was gradually peeled away and her reasons for assuming her new persona and the way that was shaping up were actually believable. The plotline was more convoluted than I had expected for what I had thought was a 'cosy' murder mystery but I liked it and was immediately enthused to start on Book 2!
I have no immediate plan for this book but as I only have Books 1 and 2, 4 and 5 it may be a while before I can complete this series!

Kindly shared with me by Flutterbies9, looking forward to reading!
A quick and enjoyable read - like another reader mentioned, I had somehow thought this was more of a cosy mystery, but quite liked that it was a bit of a darker tone. Looking forward to seeing how the series progresses!
Now on its way back to Flutterbies9 - thanks for sharing 🙂
