Aunt Helen thinks she is dying, and she's threatening to betray Pearl's secrets to her mother and also vice versa. But Winnie's revelations of her life during the war and her unpleasant first husband make up the main part of the book. It's a good read and very interesting, though the appalling treatment of women is upsetting and I got frustrated by the way the characters live their life by superstitions (even though I know this is realistic) and their consequent refusal to try to improve their lives.

Thanks a lot for this book. So many friends have recommended Amy Tan's books to me, I was feeling quite ashamed not having read any of her books yet. But now, I'll be able to correct that ;-p
